This post is long overdue! I've been making the same smoothie every morning for my husband for over two years now! He makes the coffee, and I make the smoothies :). He likes to sip this at work between breakfast and lunch for an extra boost, and I like to pour mine into a bowl and enjoy with topping + a spoon. Either way, it's a great way to pack your daily vitamins, protein and omega 3's!
One thing you won't find in this particular smoothie recipes is spinach or kale. Personally, I do not digest raw fruit and veggie combos well, so I prefer to eat them separately a few hours a part. While this is a green smoothie, it isn't veggies that give it it's beautiful blue-green color!
Spirulina is a nutrient-dense blue-green algae that can help reduce inflammation and acidity in the body, improve immune health and detoxify the body, while providing you loads of nutritional value! It's like nature's multivitamin :)
Per one teaspoon, you are getting more than enough vitamin A and vitamin K (210% DV and B12% DV, respectively), as well as plenty of iron, vitamin K and manganese. Spirulina is a superfood that provides chlorophyll, which helps detoxify the body, and Phycocyanin, the rare blue pigment and antioxidant that protects cells from damage. Pretty amazing right?
My Morning Power Smoothie also uses hemp protein for 10g of added protein. Hemp protein is special because it is easy to digest, high in fiber and contains the perfect 3:1 omega-6 to omega-3 ratio, which means in addition to protein you are assisting digestion and taking in healthy fats. Combined with the almond butter, this smoothie keeps you feeling satisfied with consistent energy for several hours! Did you know the omega 3 fatty acids are especially good for improving brain function and focus? Now you do!
Ready for the recipe??
*If you have never used spirulina before you may consider reducing the amount to 1/2 teaspoon until you get used to the taste. The other ingredients do an excellent job of covering it up, but to be blunt, it does smell and taste like seaweed :). I personally don't mind it, but if you think you will, start small and work your way up!
Made with water and no added sweetener, this smoothie comes in under 400 calories, with almost 17g of plant-based protein and about 12g of fat! Not too bad for a smoothie you can make in 5 minutes :)
Eat to live!
