I became interested in health and wellness after many years of struggling with my own health. Through adolescence and into early adult hood, I was over-weight and suffering from migraines, asthma, insomnia, anxiety, and depression. In 2007 when I was 16, I underwent an emergency surgery to remove an ovarian cyst. Shortly after I was put on birth control to prevent further complications. However, within a couple of months I started having migraines that were so debilitating that I often had to skip classes and spend two or more days in bed unable to move. I could not tolerate and light or sound which made it difficult to do anything during these episodes. I was prescribed two different migraine medications, one to prevent the migraines and the other to manage the pain. Then when I graduated college I found out I had consistently high blood pressures, and doctors wanted to prescribe a blood pressure medication as well.
It was at that point that I realized I needed to take control of my own health rather than relying on medications. I made the decision to stop taking birth control. Within a few months my migraines were completely gone, and luckily I never had another ovarian cyst. That was when I really became interested in learning how to heal my body and mind naturally. What was causing these all of the symptoms in the first place? The first step I took was focusing on my diet; I wanted to heal my body from the inside out using the power of food. I had grown up eating the Standard American Diet, and I started to realize that my eating habits were affecting much more than my weight. I was interested in going back to the basics, which meant eating as many WHOLE foods as I could, and drastically reducing the amount of processed, pre-prepared foods I was so used to eating. As my interest grew things started to change quickly. I began reading food labels and learning about the big food companies and commercial agriculture. I started cooking, a LOT (and I got really good at it). I started making my own green juices and buying super foods. I had nearly eliminated all added sugars (included my beloved Coca-Cola), and I gave up the energy drinks frozen meals for good! Over time, my taste buds completely changed, and for the first time in my life I was eating fresh vegetables and LOVING them (my parents never thought they’d see the day!). Nutrition and cooking became a fun hobby for me, and it felt amazing to be nourishing my body and preventing disease with each and every bite.
So what were the results? Well, I started feeling GOOD, better than I ever thought I COULD feel. Learning to prepare and cook fresh, whole foods for myself initiated a complete personal transformation, physically and emotionally. I felt powerful and strong and HAPPY. I started sleeping soundly for the first time in my life, my blood pressure normalized, I no longer needed coffee or sugar, and the extra weight just fell off…30 pounds to be exact! I finally had the energy and motivation to become active, and I started weight lifting and practicing yoga consistently. I felt vibrant, confident, and full of energy and clarity.
My interests then began expanding beyond food as I began to understand that there are many factors contributing to our overall health. My spirituality started developing, and I began meditating and practicing breathing techniques. I had always kept myself so busy and distracted with my phone or the TV when I was bored, but finally I was learning how to just BE, how to sit quietly and just notice my breath. I started letting go of unhealthy relationships, and I quit my stressful job. I simplified my entire life. I went back to the basics.
I decided to become a health coach because I want to share my experiences to help other improve their own health and happiness. I want to help you to understand how big of an impact the food you choose to eat has on your body, emotions, energy levels, and overall health and wellness. I want to teach you how to read labels and prepare foods that will nourish you from the inside out. I want to help you get in touch with your body and develop a healthy relationship with yourself and with others. I want to teach you how to take care of YOU so that you can feel confident and empowered enough to go after what truly makes you happy and fulfilled. Most of all, I want you to experience how good your body is meant to feel and be your supporting mentor throughout the entire journey!
